전 세계 중고등학생이 환경 해결책으로 겨루는 무료 국제 대회다.
무엇인가
디 어스 프라이즈는 13세에서 19세 중고등학생이 환경 지속가능성 해결책을 겨루는 국제 대회다. 스위스의 디 어스 파운데이션(The Earth Foundation)이 운영하고 참가비는 없다. 학생은 혼자 나가거나 최대 5명까지 팀을 짠다. 지역, 국가, 글로벌 차원의 환경 문제를 풀 새 아이디어를 내거나 이미 굴리던 프로젝트를 제출한다. 대회 기간에는 대학생과 현업 전문가가 멘토로 붙어 학생을 끌어준다.
한국 학생 참가
한국 학생도 나간다. 지리적 제한이 없어서 국적이나 사는 나라는 상관없다. 출생연도 기준 나이 조건(공식 공지에서 확인할 것)과 재학 조건만 맞으면 된다. 학교나 교육 프로그램에 등록된 중고등학생이면 되고, 홈스쿨링 학생도 받는다. 신청은 공식 웹사이트 온라인 등록 폼으로 한다. 대회 운영과 멘토링, 자료가 전부 영어다. 그래서 영어로 프로젝트를 쓰고 소통하는 능력이 사실상 있어야 한다. 혼자 나가도 되지만, 영어로 손발 맞는 팀을 꾸리면 멘토링 받고 제출 준비하기가 훨씬 수월하다. 등록과 제출 마감, 그해 자격 연령은 회차마다 바뀐다. 매번 공식 공지에서 다시 확인해라.
입시에서의 의미
국제 환경 대회에 나가고 입상하면 지속가능성에 대한 관심, 직접 움직이는 실행력, 협업 경험을 보여줄 수 있다. 이건 참고일 뿐이다. 특정 대학 합격이나 입상을 장담하지 않는다. 성적표 한 줄로 합격이 되는 건 아니다. 결과보다 프로젝트로 실제 환경 문제를 어떻게 풀었고 본인이 무엇을 했는지가 중요하다.
한국 학생도 참가할 수 있나?
할 수 있다. 지리적 제한이 없어서 한국을 포함한 어느 나라 학생이든 나이와 재학 조건만 맞으면 신청한다. 운영과 멘토링이 영어로 굴러가니 영어로 쓰고 소통하는 능력이 사실상 필요하다.

What it is
The Earth Prize is an international competition for secondary school students aged 13 to 19 who tackle environmental sustainability problems. The Earth Foundation, based in Switzerland, runs it, and there is no entry fee. Students compete alone or in teams of up to five. They submit a new idea or a project they are already running that addresses a local, national, or global environmental problem. During the competition, university students and working professionals mentor the participants.
For Korean students
Korean students can enter. There are no geographic restrictions, so nationality and where you live do not matter. You just need to meet the birth-year age requirement (check the official announcement) and be enrolled in a school or educational program. Secondary school students qualify, and homeschooled students do too. You apply through the online registration form on the official website. The competition, the mentoring, and the resources all run in English, so in practice you need to be able to write your project and communicate in English. You can go in alone, but a team that works well together in English makes the mentoring and the submission much easier. Registration and submission deadlines and the eligible birth years change every cycle. Recheck them on the official announcement each time.
Why it matters for admissions
Entering and placing at an international environmental competition shows a student's interest in sustainability, the drive to act, and the ability to work with others. Treat that as context, not a promise. It does not guarantee admission to any university or any award. One line on an application does not get anyone in. What matters is how the project actually solved an environmental problem and what the student personally contributed, not the result.
Can Korean students participate?
Yes. There are no geographic restrictions, so students from any country, Korea included, can apply once they meet the age and enrollment requirements. The competition runs in English, so you practically need to write and communicate in English.
Is there an entry fee? Can I enter alone?
No. It is free for all students and schools. You can enter alone or as a team of up to five.
