미국 연방 하원의원이 자기 지역구 학생을 대상으로 여는 앱 개발 대회다. 미국에 사는 중고등학생이 참가한다.
무엇인가
의회 앱 챌린지는 미국 연방 하원의원이 자기 지역구 단위로 여는 학생 컴퓨터과학·코딩 대회다. 학생은 원하는 프로그래밍 언어로 앱을 직접 만들고, 자기가 살거나 학교를 다니는 지역구의 하원의원에게 낸다. 지역구마다 뽑힌 우수작은 의회에서 공식 인정을 받고, 일부는 워싱턴 D.C.에 전시된다.
한국 학생 참가
한국에 사는 학생은 사실상 못 나간다. 이 대회는 미국 하원의원 지역구 단위로 돌아가서, 특정 지역구에 살거나 그 지역구 학교에 다녀야만 출품할 수 있다. 미국 지역구에 연고가 없는 한국 학생은 들어갈 길이 없다. 미국 학교에 다니거나 미국에 사는 한국 국적 학생은 자기 지역구 하원의원이 챌린지를 열면 참가할 수 있다. 한국에 있는 학생이라면 국제 학생에게 열린 앱·코딩 대회를 찾는 편이 낫다. 글로벌 해커톤이나 공개 코딩 공모전 같은 것들이다.
입시에서의 의미
미국 입시에서는 컴퓨터과학에 대한 관심과 직접 만든 결과물을 보여주는 활동이 된다. 다만 지역구마다 참가 규모와 경쟁 강도가 천차만별이고 미국 거주 학생만 받기 때문에, 한국 학생 대부분에게는 직접 쓸 일이 거의 없다. 어떤 대회든 수상 하나로 합격이 되진 않는다. 네가 만든 결과물과 만들면서 배운 게 더 무겁게 평가된다.
한국에 사는 학생도 나갈 수 있나?
사실상 어렵다. 이 대회는 미국 하원의원 지역구 단위로 돌아가서, 특정 지역구에 살거나 그 지역구 학교에 다녀야 낸다. 한국에 살면서 미국 지역구 연고가 없으면 들어갈 길이 없다.
어떤 프로그래밍 언어를 써야 하나?
언어 제한은 없다. 원하는 언어 아무거나 써서 앱을 만들면 된다. 개인으로도 팀으로도 낼 수 있다. 세부 규칙은 해당 지역구와 공식 안내로 확인해라.
수상하면 미국 대학 합격에 도움이 되나?
컴퓨터과학에 대한 관심과 직접 개발해 본 경험을 보여줄 수 있다. 다만 어떤 수상도 합격을 약속하진 않고, 미국 거주 학생만 받으니 한국 학생 대부분에게는 직접 쓸 일이 거의 없다.
What it is
The Congressional App Challenge is a computer science and coding contest that U.S. House members run district by district. Students build an app in whatever programming language they want and submit it to the Representative for the district where they live or go to school. Each district picks its winners, who get formal recognition from Congress, and some apps end up on display in Washington, D.C.
For Korean students
If you live in Korea, you basically can't enter. The contest runs district by district, and you have to live in or attend school in a specific congressional district to submit. A Korean student with no tie to a U.S. district has no way in. A Korean-national student who attends a U.S. school or lives in the United States can enter if their district's Representative decides to host it. If you're in Korea, look instead at app and coding contests that are open to international students, like global hackathons or open coding competitions.
Why it matters for admissions
For U.S. admissions, it shows real interest in computer science and a concrete project you built yourself. But district sizes and competition vary enormously, and only U.S.-based students can enter, so for most students in Korea it has little direct use. No award gets you in on its own. What you built and what you learned building it count for more than the prize.
Can a student living in Korea enter?
Pretty much no. The contest runs district by district under individual House members, and you have to live in or attend school in a specific district to submit. If you're in Korea with no tie to a U.S. district, there's no way in.
Which programming language do I have to use?
None in particular. Build your app in whatever language you want, solo or as a team. Check the specific rules with your district and the official guidance.
Does winning help with U.S. college admissions?
