무엇인가
AIME는 미국수학협회(MAA)가 주관하는 초청제 수학 시험이다. 누구나 신청해서 보는 게 아니라, AMC 10이나 AMC 12에서 기준 점수를 넘긴 학생만 응시할 수 있다. 문제는 정답이 000부터 999 사이의 정수인 단답형이다. 증명을 길게 쓰는 게 아니라 답으로 정수 하나를 적는다. AIME 점수는 다음 단계인 USAMO(USA Mathematical Olympiad)와 USAJMO(USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad) 진출자를 가리는 데 쓰인다.
한국 학생 참가
한국 학생도 칠 수 있지만 조건이 붙는다. AIME는 따로 신청하는 시험이 아니다. 먼저 AMC 10이나 AMC 12를 보고 진출 기준 점수를 넘겨야 응시 자격이 생긴다. AMC는 한국 내 공인 시험장이나 한국 학생이 등록 가능한 해외 시험장에서 칠 수 있다. 그러니까 순서는 AMC 응시, 기준 점수 통과, 그다음 AIME 초청이다. 자격 기준 점수와 시험 날짜는 매년 MAA가 새로 공지하니 공식 안내를 직접 확인해야 한다.
입시에서의 의미

What it is
AIME is an invitation-only math exam run by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). You don't sign up for it directly. You qualify by clearing a cutoff on the AMC 10 or AMC 12. Every question has an integer answer between 000 and 999, so you write down a number, not a written proof. Scores then feed into who advances to the next round, the USAMO (USA Mathematical Olympiad) and the USAJMO (USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad).
For Korean students
Korean students can take it, with a condition. You can't register for AIME on its own. First you take the AMC 10 or AMC 12 and clear the cutoff, and that earns you a spot. The AMC runs at authorized sites in Korea and at overseas sites Korean students can register for. So the order is simple: sit the AMC, pass the cutoff, get the AIME invitation. Why it matters for admissions
Making AIME means you scored near the top on the AMC. A high score can put you in the running for higher rounds like the USAMO or USAJMO. But it's one signal of mathematical depth, not the whole picture. A score alone won't get you admitted anywhere, and AIME promises nothing about an admissions result.
