무엇인가
미국 외교협회(American Foreign Service Association, AFSA)가 매년 여는 고등학생 에세이 대회다. 외교, 미국 외교정책, 외교관의 일과 관련된 주제가 해마다 하나씩 나온다. 학생은 그 주제로 1,000~1,500단어짜리 에세이를 쓴다. 그냥 의견을 적는 게 아니라 자료로 받쳐야 한다. 학술 저널, 정부 문서, 1차 자료를 직접 찾아 인용해야 하고, 출처 없이 쓴 글은 통하지 않는다. 외교와 국제관계가 궁금한 학생이 자기 분석력과 글쓰기를 보여주는 자리다.
한국 학생 참가
참가 자격은 미국 50개 주, 워싱턴 D.C., 미국령에서 9~12학년에 다니는 학생이다. 해외 고등학교에 다니는 미국 시민권자나 영주권자(lawful permanent resident)도 된다. 그러니 한국에 사는 학생이라면, 미국 시민권이나 영주권을 가진 채 한국 고등학교(국제학교 포함)에 다니는 경우 참가할 수 있다. 미국 시민권·영주권이 없는 순수 한국 국적 학생은 한국에서 학교를 다니는 한 자격에 안 맞을 수 있다. 자기 상황이 애매하면 지원 전에 공식 규정(afsa.org/rules-and-guidelines)에서 직접 확인해라. 제출은 온라인, 에세이는 영어로 쓴다. 부모가 외교관(Foreign Service)인 학생, 직전 대회 1위 수상자는 참가할 수 없다.
입시에서의 의미
외교, 국제관계, 정치학, 공공정책 쪽으로 가려는 학생에게 맞는 활동이다. 자료를 찾아 영어로 논증하는 힘과 세계 이슈에 대한 관심을 한 편의 글로 보여줄 수 있다. 1차 자료를 직접 인용하고 분석으로 끌고 가야 하니 학술적 글쓰기 훈련도 된다. 다만 이 대회에 나가거나 상을 받는다고 특정 대학 합격이 약속되진 않는다. 입시에서의 무게는 지원서 전체와 진로의 일관성 안에서 정해진다.
한국 국적 학생도 참가할 수 있나?

에세이 분량과 출처 요건은?
1,000~1,500단어로 쓴다. 이 범위를 벗어나면 심사 자체가 안 된다. 단어 수에 출처 목록은 안 들어간다. 학술 저널, 신문, 정부 문서 같은 여러 출처를 인용해야 하고 그중 최소 3개는 1차 자료여야 한다. 위키피디아 같은 일반 백과사전은 안 쳐준다.

What it is
The American Foreign Service Association runs this essay contest for high schoolers every year. Each year brings one prompt about diplomacy, U.S. foreign policy, or the work of the Foreign Service. Students write 1,000 to 1,500 words on it. Opinions alone won't carry the essay. You have to back it with research: academic journals, government documents, and primary sources you dig up and cite, including at least three primary sources. It's a place for students who care about diplomacy and world affairs to show how they think and how they write.
For Korean students
Eligibility is grades 9-12 in any U.S. state, D.C., or U.S. territory. U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents at high schools overseas also qualify. So for a student in Korea, this works if you hold U.S. citizenship or permanent residency while attending a Korean high school, international schools included. A student with Korean nationality only and no U.S. citizenship or residency may not qualify while enrolled in Korea. If your case is unclear, check the official rules at afsa.org/rules-and-guidelines before you apply. Submission is online and the essay is in English. Students whose parents are in the Foreign Service, and the previous year's first-place winner, can't enter.
Why it matters for admissions
This fits students heading toward diplomacy, international relations, political science, or public policy. One essay can show two things at once: that you can research and argue in English, and that you actually follow global issues. Citing primary sources and carrying them into an analysis is also real practice for academic writing. Entering or winning won't promise admission to any school. In admissions it counts only inside the full application and a consistent direction.
Can students with Korean nationality participate?
If you hold U.S. citizenship or permanent residency and attend a Korean high school, you can enter. A student with Korean nationality only, no U.S. citizenship or residency, may not qualify while enrolled in Korea. If it's unclear, check the official rules at afsa.org/rules-and-guidelines.
What are the length and source requirements?
You write 1,000 to 1,500 words. Go outside that range and the essay isn't judged at all. The source list doesn't count toward the word total. You need varied sources like academic journals, newspapers, and government documents, with at least three primary sources. General encyclopedias like Wikipedia don't count.
What is the contest about?
